KANPUR: A 20-year-old youth allegedly shot his girlfriend and shot himself later in the Bharthana police station area of Etawah district on Thursday.
Police said, initial findings suggested youth shot down the girl and committed suicide.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jaiprakash Singh said that the bodies found on the canal track between village Ramatpura Umarsenda and Turaiya bridge have been identified as that of Arun Kumar (20) and Poonam (19), the pistol was found in the hand of the deceased, which suggested that the youth first shot dead the girl, then pulled the trigger on himself.
“Poonam was pursuing B.Sc at a private college while Arun Rathore had done B.Com,” SSP said and added, “The forensic team has reached the spot, which along with the police has initiated investigation.”
SSP further said that it has come to fore that both Arun and Poonam wanted to get married but were from different castes, a fact that was unacceptable to both sets of parents.
Arun’s father said that he had sent him to his maternal grandmother’s place on April 18, but he has no information about how he has reached there.
Poonam’s father said that his daughter had left home in the morning for coaching but he is not aware as to how she reached here. Poonam was a resident of Salaya village and Arun of Chandrapura village near Maman in Bharthana police station area.
