Uttar Pradesh: NSA invoked against June 3 Kanpur violence mastermind | Kanpur News

KANPUR: The police on Thursday invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against Hayat Zafar Hashmi, the national president of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Fans Association and the alleged mastermind of the June 3 violence at Parade and Nai Sadak areas of the city.
The police have also taken action under the Gangster Act against Mukhtar Baba, owner of Baba Biryani outlet, builder Haji Wasi and criminals Aqeel Khichdi and Shafiq of D2 gang responsible for funding Hashmi for the violence.
A crowd led by Hayat Zafar Hashmi had called for market closure after Friday prayers on Nai Sadak on June 3 in protest against Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet in a debate on a TV channel.
The crowd which came out after the prayers in protest against the closure of shops near Chandreshwar Ka Hata, had indulged in stone-pelting, firing and bombing. Seven people were injured in the violence at Parade, Nai Sadak areas.
Three cases were registered by the police in this regard. So far, the police have arrested 62 people, including Hayat Zafar Hashmi, Mukhtar Baba, builder Haji Wasi and criminals Aqeel Khichdi and Shafiq, in this case and sent them to jail.
The investigation of this case is being done by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT has claimed in its investigation report that there was a deep conspiracy behind the violence and opposition to the statement of Nupur Sharma was just an excuse.
During investigation by SIT, it came to fore that the June 3 violence in Parade and its adjoining areas, including Nai Sadak, was carried with an intention to grab the Chandreshwar Hata. For this, builder Haji Wasi had given Rs 10 lakhs as a token money to the organization of the main accused Hayat Zafar Hashmi.
After the Hata was vacated, another installment of Rs 90 lakhs was to be given to Hashmi. This was revealed by Wasi during the interrogation by the SIT sleuths.
According to SIT sources, builder Wasi told the investigators that he was eyeing the land of Chandreshwar Hata for long as he wanted to build a market with apartments there. Later, he came in contact with Hashmi, who spoke about staging a protest against the said objectionable statement.
Sources further said that Wasi told the police that after hearing this, he made a plan to get the Hata vacated.
In fact, on the day when the violence erupted, the then President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were in Kanpur to participate in a program organized in the then President’s village in Kanpur Dehat.
The date of June 3 was deliberately chosen so that in the event of a disturbance in the presence of VVIPs, the matter would get maximum media attention and would bring disrepute to India all over the world.
In a joint press conference on Thursday, police commissioner Vijay Singh Meena and district magistrate Visakh G Iyer said that the police have taken action against Hayat Zafar Hashmi under the National Security Act in the June 3 violence.
Commissioner of Police, Vijay Singh Meena, said that in this case, action had been taken against Mukhtar Baba, builder Haji Wasi and Aqueel Khichdi and Shafiq under the Gangster Act.
“All the five accused are presently in jail, and have been informed about the action taken in the jail itself and the documents have been served to them. In the case of Hashmi, he could be kept in jail for one year under NSA,” the officers added.
