Uttar Pradesh CM’s mass marriage event faced with runaway groom | Kanpur News

KANPUR: The Chief Minister’s Samuhik Vivah (mass marriage) event which saw 12,000 couples get married in 60 districts of Uttar Pradesh on Friday had a unique challenge in Kanpur: A runaway groom.
According to the officials, the groom at Sharifapur village of the district where 144 couples were to get married left the ‘mandap’ for a minute on the pretext of getting a glass of water and disappeared. State cabinet minister Dharampal Singh was in attendance at the event.
As soon as the incident came to light, a massive search was conducted but his whereabouts were not to be found.
The bride hailing from Gugrapur town of the district was set to get married to the man hailing from Mainpuri district at a private guest house here on Friday.
The girl’s mother later told the officials that the groom had demanded a motorcycle in dowry. “When she expressed her inability citing financial constraint, he planned the exit and slipped away,” an official said.
Subsequently, the girl’s mother made a complaint to district Social Welfare Officer Anjani Kumar Singh.
Singh said that the search is underway for the groom. “Once we are able to trace him, we would talk to him and his family members. If allegations of dowry wherein he demanded a Bullet motorcycle, a case will be lodged against him,” Singh added.
Notably, the Samuhik Vivah scheme launched in 2017 aims to help people from poor families get married with the government bearing the entire cost of the ceremony. Under the scheme, the government bears the cost of the wedding and also provides the couples with some basic articles to help them start their married lives. Each couple was given a bucket, tawa, pressure cooker, silver toe rings, silver anklets and a few clothes as gifts. A sum of Rs 35,000 was also deposited into the accounts of all the brides.
Social welfare minister Asim Arun, under whose department the programme was planned and implemented, said that another ceremony is scheduled for June 17 where about 6,000-7,000 couples are expected to tie the knot.
