KANPUR: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) took Mukhtar Baba, the owner of the famous Baba Biryani chain of outlets in its custody on Wednesday for questioning over the June 3 violence at Parade and adjoining areas following a call to protest the controversial remarks on the Prophet during a TV news debate. The SIT has detained Mukhtar Baba at the Colonelganj police station where he was brought for questioning.
Police sources said that Mukhtar Baba was found to be involved in funding the main accused of the June 3 violence Hayat Zafar Hashmi.
For the past several days, police were zeroing in on the financiers of the June 3 violence and took Mukhtar Baba in custody on Wednesday morning.
The detention of Mukhtar Baba has been confirmed by the Joint Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari.
Tiwari said many names cropped up during the probe of violence funding and are being taken into custody for questioning.
“We are also questioning Mukhtar Baba. He is in police custody and is being grilled at the SIT office at Colonelganj police station,” he added.
Officials said that many cases are registered against Mukhtar Baba and police are now also collecting the details of those cases.
If sources are to be believed, it has been revealed during interrogation that Hayat used to collect funds from Mukhtar Baba, who also helped in arranging food and drinks for those called for stone pelting.
Mukhtar Baba is already on the target of the district administration and the Custodian Office in an Enemy Property case as he is accused of opening a biryani outlet by capturing enemy property and part of an ancient temple.
Many more suspects are also on the radar of the SIT.
During interrogation, Zafar Hayat Hashmi, who masterminded the violence after Friday prayers on June 3 at Parade and adjoining areas, had revealed names of many financiers. After this, the SIT team twice interrogated the four other accused and got important evidence related to funding.
