‘peeved’ Over Agnipath Scheme, Army Aspirant Commits Suicide | Kanpur News

Kanpur: A 23-year-old Army aspirant, allegedly peeved over the recently launched Agnipath scheme, committed suicide by hanging himself in Fatehpur district.
The incident took place in Visnamau village under Kalyanpur police station on June 24.
It is alleged that the deceased Vikas Patel had been preparing for Army recruitment for many years, and was very upset after the launch of Agnipath scheme. He took the extreme step by hanging himself from a mango tree in the vicinity of his house.
Terming it to be a routine incident, police that Vikas committed suicide because he had appeared twice but failed to enlist in the Army as he was declared medically unfit.
Vikas’s father Chheda Lal, meanwhile, said that his son had been preparing to join the Army for the past several years.
“He had taken part in the Army recruitment drive twice, but he did not qualify as he was declared medically unfit on some ground. After the recently launched Agnipath scheme, he (Vikas) was very much upset and resorted to the extreme step,” said Chheda Lal.
Rajesh, a friend of the deceased, said, “Vikas has been preparing for the Army for the last many years. We had appeared together in the Army recruitment, but Vikas was declared unfit in the medical examination. Even after being declared medically unfit, Vikas did not stop preparing. However, he was a bit agitated over the Agnipath scheme. Vikas used to say that he had worked and now he would get a job for four years only.”
BJP MP Varun Gandhi, who is opposing the Agnipath scheme, also targeted the government by tweeting that first Sachin in Rohtak and now Vikas in Fatehpur committed suicide because of the scheme.
“Why should youths do a four-year job after working hard for six years,” he tweeted.
Varun further tweeted that hundreds of lives were lost in the farmers’ movement only due to lack of communication. “Do we want to repeat the same mistake again?,” he asked.
However, police said that the suicide by Vikas has nothing to do with the Agnipath scheme. CO Bindki Parshuram Tripathi said, “Vikas had appeared in the Army recruitment twice, but was declared medically unfit on both occasions. He was hurt by repeated failures.”
