Omicron now in 10 Uttar Pradesh districts; 972 Covid cases | Kanpur News

LUCKNOW: Concern over Covid-19 situation deepened further on Tuesday with as many as 992 more cases being detected in the state in the past 24 hours. The case count on Tuesday was nearly double of the 572 cases recorded on Monday.
Moreover, the reports of genome sequencing traced 23 new cases of the Omicron strain, taking the total of such cases in the state to 31, and leaving the health officials worried about the sharp surge.
Health department sources said the 23 new Omicron cases included eight in Lucknow, five in Meerut, three in Ghaziabad, two each in Moradabad, Kanpur, Agra, and one in Maharajganj.
Prior to this, a total of eight Omicron cases were reported, including from Muzaffarnagar (3), Ghaziabad (2), Rae Bareli (1), Meerut (1), Gautam Budh Nagar (1). Also, at least 50 samples for genome sequencing are pending.
This means that the new strain is present in 10 cities of UP.
Additional chief secretary health and family welfare Amit Mohan Prasad said prevention is extremely necessary as the Covid-19 pandemic had increased its activity in the state.
“While the surge in new cases is undeniable, the number of hospitalisations is low. But prevention is must to ensure that the system and resources are not overwhelmed,” he said.
The official bulletin indicated that a spike in cases was visible in big cities, including Gautam Budh Nagar (165), Ghaziabad (174), Lucknow (150) and Meerut (102). Also about 13 other cities made double digit entries in the past 24 hours.
Though no new death was reported, 77 persons recovered from the infection and took the total of cured Covid patients to 1,68,807. The data showed that the number of active cases increased to 3,173 with the new entries. With this, only two out of 75 districts in the state have zero presence of the pandemic virus.
ACS Prasad urged people to adhere to Covid-19 prevention protocol strictly and get vaccinated as soon as possible in individual and social interest.
