Kanpur: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday arrested former Samajwadi Party leader Nizam Qureshi, wanted in connection with the June 3 violence that erupted in Parade and its adjoining areas after Friday prayers.
In the FIR lodged by the police, Nizam’s name was at number five position. Described by the police as the second mastermind of the violence, he was evading his arrest. The team of SIT, however, had taken him on its radar and in the process was raiding his possible hideouts. On Saturday, the SIT team arrested Nizam from the Beconganj area of the city. Violence had erupted on the afternoon of June 3 in the Parade and its adjoining areas. Nearly a dozen people were injured. The police had registered three FIRs with regard to the violence. During investigations, it came to fore that the Kanpur violence was instigated in a planned manner. In fact, police have got strong evidence in this regard through various WhatsApp chat groups.
Nizam had served as the city secretary of the SP. Along with this, he is the president of All India Jamiatul Quresh Action Committee. On May 22, Nizam was expelled by the SP city president Dr. Imran. It was alleged that Nizam was not taking interest in the work of the organization. As per SIT sources, “A WhatsApp group named ‘Team Nizam Qureshi’ was running on the mobile phone of the former SP leader. The chat by the members of this group went viral on social media after the Kanpur violence, which substantiated that a conspiracy was being hatched to spoil the atmosphere of Kanpur.” Nizam, through his WhatsApp group, had also appealed to the Muslims not to buy food and drink or household items around the Parade area from the people of other communities.Commissioner of police Vijay Singh Meena said, “Police are interrogating former SP leader Nizam Qureshi who has close links with Hayat Zafar Hashmi, the mastermind of Kanpur violence. Nizam Qureshi had called a meeting for the closure of the market on June 1 at Akbar Azam Hall, in which an appeal was made for the closure of the market on June 3. He was absconding after his name appeared in the FIR.”
