Morning Walkers At Nana Rao Park Stage Protest | Kanpur News

Kanpur: Residents living in localities close to Nana Rao park, besides Samajwadi and Congressmen are up in arms against the civic body’s decision to charge fees from the morning walkers for the entry into the park. On Wednesday locals, besides SP MLA Amitabh Bajpai along with workers staged a sit-in dharna at the park. Not only this, they also launched a signature campaign outside the park.
Recently, the authorities had for the first time introduced the concept of charging an entry fee of Rs five from children while Rs 10 from adults and a monthly fee of Rs 250 from regular morning walkers for the entry into the park. For a long time, morning walkers, besides other visitors, entered Nana Rao free of cost but recently the Kanpur Municipal corporation has imposed an entry fee.
But the locals, besides political parties like Samajwadi and Congress, who are against the fee are not convinced. “The park has always been free for walkers so why should we pay now? We will now not pay tax for breathing fresh air. We have been collecting signatures from walkers since the fee notice was put up and sent letters stating our objection to the KMC, district administration and the chief minister,” said SP MLA Amitabh Bajpai.
Most of the protesters are senior citizens and youngsters. The authorities called the police, who were on standby. KMC officials point out that the entry fee is being charged to maintain the upkeep of the park, besides to generate revenue as nearly Rs 9 crore have been spent on the maintenance and beautification of the park.
“We have spent more than Rs 9 crore on the park’s maintenance and beautification. Can residents not pay Rs 5 and Rs 10 for the facilities, we have been providing them,” said an official.
Meanwhile, a group of Congress party leaders and workers assembled at Nana Rao Park on Wednesday to lodge their protest against the imposition of entry fee from the visitors.
The assembly very soon turned into a procession that went to the district magistrate office and handed over a memorandum to ACM -2 Ramanuj Singh, addressed to the senior authorities.
