Kanpur: Kanpur Municipal Corporation has decided to conduct a drone survey of the city to bring all buildings under the ambit of house tax.
As per KMC’s record around 4.65 lakh buildings are registered in its record and it realizes around Rs 2.36 billion as tax from the house owners. This amount can be raised if all houses are brought under the tax umbrella. Around 50,000 houses are not in the KMC’s record.
According to a KMC official, the KMC can net more taxes but its own employees are playing their game and minting money by making wrong assessments. To break this chain, KMC has decided to conduct drone surveys as it will expose the corrupt tax officials, he said.
A resolution to this effect was passed at the last meeting of the Smart City Board and soon a tender process will begin to finalize the company to be engaged in conducting drone surveys. KMC in its last geographic survey conducted in 2006 had included several thousand houses in the tax net. At present, a Lucknow-based company which has been conducting surveys for the last three years could not even complete 50 percent of the work, the official said.
A city map would be prepared by drone survey and on its basis each house in every ward would be surveyed and that would reveal whether building was under the ambit of tax or not or how much tax was being paid.
At present there are more than 30,000 apartments in the city which are paying old house taxes instead of apartment tax, the official further said. Municipal commissioner Shiv Sharanappa GN said that several residential houses had been converted into guest houses, nursing homes and shopping complexes but they too were paying old residential taxes.
Drone survey will identify the exact condition of the building and bring the houses under tax net which have been evading taxes”, he said.
