Kanpur: All police stations and out-posts in the city are set to be equipped with CCTV cameras with video and audio recording facilities in order to monitor the functioning of the police 24 hours a day, besides to prevent excesses in custody.
In this line, Chakeri police station became the first police station where video audio cameras were installed on Friday. Security cameras were installed at the office of inspector, ‘munshiyana’, lock-up, reception, visitors room, entry and exit and points, said the police sources. Recently, two incidents of alleged police excess came to light in the city. The first incident was reported from Nawabganj, in which a woman committed suicide due to police torture. Savitri, the domestic help in the Madhu Kapoor murder case in Swaroopnagar, also accused the police of giving third degree in the name of interrogation. City police commissioner Vijay Singh Meena on Friday witnessed the activities of the Chakeri police station. “Going by the big count of staff in the commissionerate, till now there used to be a lot of problems in monitoring each and every staff member but now we will be able to keep track of their activities 24* 7 easily,” said Meena
