Bihar STF seizes 1,000 cartridges smuggled from Jharkhand for use in panchayat election | Patna News


PATNA: A team of Special Task Force (STF) of state police arrested three arms smugglers and seized a massive 1,000 live cartridges from their possession in Rajgir, Nalanda on Thursday which they had smuggled from Jharkhand to supply criminals in Bihar.
Sources said that the demand for cartridges was very high due to ongoing panchayat election in state and seized items could have been used by criminal elements for violence during polling.
The arrested arms and ammunition smugglers have been identified as Anil Singh of Musepur Khaira under Daudnagar police station area of Aurangabad, Prabhat Kumar of Nardiganj in Nawada and Pawan Singh alias Vijay Singh of Baksu under Rajgir police station area in Nalanda.
The arrestings took place when Anil and Prabhat were about to deliver the smuggled cartridge consignment to Pawan at Baksu, which they had smuggled from Jharkhand on bike.
STF also seized two country made semiautomatic pistols, four cellphones, two bikes, driving licences, PAN cards, debit cards and Rs 370 from their possession.
“The cartridges were to be supplied to criminals in Nalanda, Nawada, Patna and neighbouring districts. Demand of cartridges was high due to panchayat elections. All of the seized cartridges were of .315 bore which is used in bolt action rifles by police but are used by criminals rampantly in breach-load country made pistols,” a senior police officer said.
Sources said Pawan had finalised price of entire consignment for Rs 3.5 lakh. “Rs 26,000 out of Rs 3.5 lakh pending for payment by Pawan to Jharkhand based smuggled after cartridge delivery,” a senior officer said. He said that Pawan would have further sold each cartridge for Rs 390-450 to criminal gangs.
Police sources said that they are gathering details of criminal antecedents of the trio arrested in smuggling. “Further raids are to be carried in Jharkhand from where the cartridge consignment had originated,” police sources said.
This is one of the rare occasions where 1000 or more cartridges have been seized together in state.
On December 26, 2017, STF seized 1000 cartridges of different bores and arms including an AK-47 assault rifle, a US made springfield rifle from Tikarampur, under Mufassil police station area, Munger.
On February 10, 2019, police in Purnia seized 1200 live AK-47 rounds manufactured in Myanmar, three AKs and two UBGLs from a SUV.
On September 15, 2019, STF seized 1600 live cartridges of different bores from Kurhani, Muzaffarpur.
On February 4, 2020, STF again seized 500 live cartridges of different bores from Brahmapur, Muzaffarpur. On September 14, 2020, STF once again seized 1100 cartridges of 7.65mm from Mufassil, Khagaria.
This year, STF seized 200 cartridges from Khagaria on February 2, 100 from Sangrampur, Munger on June 24 and 407 live cartridges from Kinjar, Arwal on July 8.
