bhabhanipur: ‘Fix responsibility for the lapse’: EC writes to West Bengal govt expressing displeasure over violence in Bhabhanipur | India News

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday wrote to the West Bengal government expressing displeasure over the incidence of violence in Bhabhanipur and directing strict measures to be taken to avoid a repeat during the remaining period of the bye-election.
In its letter, EC also asked the state administration to fix responsibility for Monday’s lapse.
The EC’s rap came despite the West Bengal chief secretary, in his report to the poll panel on the Bhabhanipur clash in which BJP leader Dilip Ghosh was allegedly manhandled, informed the poll panel that it has registered an FIR in connection with the incident and arrested eight persons.
Sources added that the state government also claimed that all political leaders needed to inform the police in advance about their plans for door-to-door campaigning so that proper security can be arranged. It was not done in the immediate case, it insisted.
However, EC was not satisfied with the explanation and said it was the responsibility of the local police to maintain law and order and detect any situation or assembly of persons that may potentially lead to violence.
Following the violent incident, BJP had approached EC seeking imposition of Section 144 in Bhabhanipur, deployment of additional Central forces and CCTV coverage of all booths.
