JHANSI/KANPUR: A day after a zila panchayat member in Banda, Shweta Singh Gaur, was found hanging in her house on Wednesday, the police on Thursday lodged a case of murder against her husband and in-laws.
Meanwhile, the daughters of the deceased have levelled serious allegations against their father and grandparents for continuously torturing their mother for not bearing a boy. Shweta has three daughters.
The FIR lodged in Banda Kotwali on Thursday by the brother of the deceased, Omkar Singh, mentions the name of her husband Deepak Singh Gaur, father-in- law Rajbahadur Singh, mother-in-law Pushpa Singh and brother-in-law Dhananjay Singh. They have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of IPC and sections 3, 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
The complainant has mentioned in the FIR (a copy of which is with TOI) that his sister was continuously being harassed and beaten to bring Rs 50 lakh in dowry. The husband of the deceased used to often say that he will kill Shweta and marry someone else and since he is an influential man no one can cause him any harm. Circle officer (City) Rakesh Kumar Singh said, “An FIR has been registered following a complaint. Action will be taken on the basis of the autopsy report and other evidence.”
Shweta’s daughters came in front of the media and levelled serious allegations against their father and grandfather, saying they used to torture Shweta for not bearing a boy and would often threaten to divorce her. One of the daughters also said that their father used to threaten to kill their mother.
Body of Shweta, 35, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in her house in Indira Nagar under Sadar Kotwali police station of Banda on Wednesday while her husband Deepak, also a BJP worker and a liquor trader, was found missing.
Shweta, an active local BJP party worker was elected zila panchayat member from Chandwara.
