asha jyoti kendra: Min Lashes Out At Officials Of Asha Jyoti Kendra For Laxity | Kanpur News

Kanpur: Minister of state for women welfare, child development, nutrition Pratibha Shukla, on Wednesday, inspected the Asha Jyoti Centre where a woman had allegedly committed suicide after police torture in a theft case. The theft had occurred at a businessman’s house in NRI city of Nawabganj area in April.
During inspection, the minister lashed out at the authorities for taking no action action against the businessman for hiring the deceased woman’s minor daughter even though a complaint was filed against him in this regard.
The minister also visited the home of the deceased in Magarwara, Unnao district, and met her family members. The teen daughter of the deceased told the minister that police had beaten up her mother with a leather belt at the police station after which she ended her life.
Members of the State Women’s Commission Poonam Kapoor and Ranjana Shukla also accompanied the minister.
The teenager used to work in the businessman’s house from where valuables including a watch, gold and diamond jewellery were stolen on April 17. Nawabganj police had detained the girl and her mother on May 8 for questioning.
At 2.15pm, both were taken to Asha Jyoti Kendra (Sakhi-One Stop Centre) in Swaroop Nagar. On May 9 morning, the woman’s body was found hanging with a saree from ventilator in bathroom of the centre. Preliminary findings revealed that police had arbitrarily kept the woman at the centre against norms.
Subsequently, the DM formed an inquiry committee under ACM VI Vanya Singh to investigate the matter. Clarification has been sought from the centre manager. DCP Raveena Tyagi investigating the role of police in the case has been given one week for investigation.
District magistrate M Neha Sharma said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered. “Those found guilty will be brought to book,” she added.
