Kanpur: Going by the WhatsApp messages procured from various groups, it has come to fore that agitators protesting against the Agnipath scheme were conspiring something big to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the city.
Screenshots of several such inflammatory posts were doing rounds on social media platforms throughout the day. Police said that there was a plan to set ablaze Ramadevi police outpost in the city by the protesters.
Then there was a message wherein the user was provoking other group members to stage a road blockade at Naubasta -Hamirpur Road. The police swung into action and intensified its vigil with the help of cyber cell after the screenshots of such messages went viral on social media platforms.
According to joint police commissioner (Law and Order) Anand Prakash Tiwari, the police have identified more than 200 such people who were conspiring for violent demonstrations in many areas like Babupurwa and Kakadeo.
Police have started zeroing in seven mobile numbers used for sharing such instigating messages. “On the basis of which several people have been taken into custody and they are being interrogated now,” he said.
According to the police officer, an attempt has been made to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the city. The Crime branch has initiated investigation and in the process picked up half a dozen youths for questioning.
Similarly, in protest against the Agnipath scheme, a group of youths stopped the goods train in Kanpur Dehat at Lalpur railway station on Friday. The youths who were carrying the national flag in their hands were demanding rollback of the scheme. Three youth were taken into custody while they were heading towards a railway crossing to stop the trains.
