KANPUR: The SIT is now scanning for a list of 52 accused, booked and sent to jail only under the section of robbery in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots of Kanpur. However, there are inputs that many come among them had committed heinous crime like murder.
In the absence of eyewitness and strong evidence, they were bailed out and got a clean chit and later released.
Now, the Special Investigating Team (SIT), set up to probe the riots, is searching for the same list of the 52 accused so that they can be interrogated again and booked for murder as well.
DIG SIT Balendu Bhushan said that the police had conducted a poor investigation at that time and most of the people were acquitted in such cases.
“Charge sheet was filed in as many as 11 such cases and nearly 52 people were acquitted. We have sought permission from the government to re-investigate these cases to see whether they were involved in the murder of Sikh people,” said Bhushan further.
SIT has so far completed the investigation of 11 cases out of 40 cases (murder and dacoity). So far, 96 accused were traced out of which 74 are alive. Four of them were also arrested a couple of days ago. This entire action has been taken within three and a half years.
Nearly, 70 accused are yet to be arrested. SIT officials said that the accused being arrested are also giving information about many more accused, so the number of accused may increase.
