Kanpur: Advocates of Kanpur Nagar district on Tuesday abstained from judicial work to protest against arrest of advocate Ashutosh Pathak who was sent to jail under judicial custody.
The Kanpur Bar Association and the Lawyers’ Association in a joint meeting condemned the police action and decided to abstain from judicial work. They communicated their decision to the district judge.
As per information, a dispute arose between Ashutosh Pathak and employees of Chakeri post office on July 9 after which the police registered two FIRs against Ashutosh under sections 332/504/506 IPC and the Arms Act and sent his challan to the remand magistrate from where his anticipatory bail was admitted. On July 11, the advocate was called to Chakeri police station on the pretext to collect his goods which he had kept at the police station. When he reached the police station, police arrested him under section 107/116 of Cr PC and sent his challan to police line.
The advocate presented his bail application but instead of considering it, he was sent to jail by the ACP/magistrate in vengeance which was against the law and violation of the apex court’s direction, the two Bar Associations claimed. The Bar Associations have demanded legal action against the ACP/magistrate as he had acted against law. tnn
