Kanpur: The police have arrested six persons in connection with the murder of KESCO employee Ramesh Chandra Verma’s son Govind Verma (25), in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to the police, Govind was killed only because he had refused to allow one of his friends, Akash to smoke ‘hookah’ at his house recently.
Police managed to zero-in on the accused with the help of CCTV footage and surveillance.
The robbed black colour Baleno car, a bike, besides cash worth Rs 50,000 and a shirt have been recovered from those arrested. The arrested have been identified as Akash, Rohan, Aditya, Saurabh Rathore, Priyanshu Kumar and Sagar Balmiki, all residents of Nawabganj area of the city.
Govind, son of KESCO worker Ramesh Verma, resident of Nawabganj’s Khyora, had left the house on the evening of July 1.
He had last spoken to his family members at around 10 the same night. After he did not return home, his family members lodged a missing complaint at the Nawabganj police station.
His body was found the next day in the Akbarpur area of Kanpur Dehat district.
The incident came to light after the family identified the body of the deceased recovered from Rania area of Akbarpur in Kanpur Dehat on July 3.
Subsequently, the Nawabganj police converted the missing case into the kidnapping-cum murder and launched an investigation.
Police traced the accused with the help of the message of money withdrawal from an ATM in Unnao. Subsequently, the police procured the CCTV footage of the ATM kiosk. “In which some people were seen forcibly holding Govind. The police thereafter achieved a breakthrough following questioning of Rohan, one among the accused. He revealed the names of five others including Akash, Aditya, Saurabh Rathore, Priyanshu Kumar and Sagar Balmiki,” said a police official privy to the investigation.
Akash was solely responsible for the entire incident, who took revenge for his humiliation from Govind, said the official further and added, “Govind had recently refused to give him hookah to smoke and shooed him away from his house.”
On July 1, the accused Aditya, Akash, Priyanshu and Sagar were going to buy cake for their friend Vishnu’s birthday, on the way they saw Govind standing near the CNG station, said the police. “Then on the gun-point, they made Govind sit in his car. As they didn’t know how to drive, they called their friend Saurabh to help them in driving the car,” said the police.
The police said that those people left from there. “On the way, Govind’s sister Nisha called Govind and said that as he remained untraceable, she had lodged a missing complaint with the police. After this the accused got angry and decided to eliminate Govind. After withdrawing money worth Rs 20,000, they left Unnao, and on reaching a desolate spot in Shuklaganj Rohan and Akash killed him by strangling him with a scarf.
“Sagar Balmiki, one among the accused, got down on the way and asked others to deliver his share to him. Thereafter, they reached Ramadevi area and from there Kanpur Dehat’s Rania where the body of Govind was thrown in the drain near the Raipur village. After the murder, the five accused told Sagar that they have killed Govind and asked him come and take his share. The looted ring and chain were given to Aditya, so that he could sell it and obtain money. The looted car was parked at the stand at the Ghantaghar. The accused had distributed 20,000 rupees amongst themselves. Later, they reached Vishnu’s house to celebrate his birthday,” police said.
“We have arrested Rohan from KESA colony, while others including Akash, Aditya, Saurabh Rathore, Priyanshu Kumar and Sagar Balmiki from near Jageshwar temple near Ganga Barrage on Wednesday morning,” said Commissioner of Police Vijay Singh Meena, who added. “They all have been sent to jail after being booked under relevant sections of IPC.”
